With funding from Canada’s Peace and Stabilization Operations Program (PSOP), Save the Children is implementing a two-year project to enhance the effectiveness of UN peacekeeping in preventing child recruitment. The project focuses on:
• Strengthening understanding of implementing the Vancouver Principles among UN member states and stakeholders.
• Improving coordination between peacekeeping missions and child protection actors in Somalia and South Sudan to ensure continuity beyond mission drawdowns.
The project employs a gender-responsive, conflict-sensitive approach, collaborating with national governments, mission personnel, CSOs, women’s rights organizations, and community members, including youth. Strategies include:
- Utilizing gender-informed evidence for advocacy, focusing on mandate clarity, planning, monitoring, and women’s contributions
- Enhancing mission personnel’s child protection knowledge through training and sensitization
- Engaging local communities through consultations, capacity-building workshops, and expanding civic space.
- Highlight the project’s gender impact by showcasing the experiences of female participants, featuring female mission personnel, child protection focal points, peace support personnel, and project team members in both countries
